Tokyo Olympics: History created in Tokyo by winning ‘Phir Dil Do Hockey Ko…’ medal

Goalkeeper PR Sreejesh also played a key role in India’s victory, who made an impressive nine defenses. Team India has managed to win a medal in the Olympics after 41 years. India’s last medal before this was in 1980 in Moscow, when the team won the yellow medal under the captaincy of Vasudevan Bhaskaran. Since then the performance of the Indian hockey team has declined steadily and it could not do better after finishing fifth in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.


This is India’s fourth medal at the Tokyo Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu won silver in weightlifting, PV Sindhu bronze in badminton, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain also took bronze. On Wednesday, wrestler Ravi Dahiya has assured another medal for India.

In the 27th minute of the game, India got a penalty corner, on which Hardik Singh scored a goal through a rebound to make the score 2-3. Two minutes later, India got another penalty corner, which Harmanpreet Singh converted to level India 3-3. This was Harmanpreet Singh’s sixth goal in the Tokyo Olympics.

In the second quarter, it was raining goals and a total of five goals were scored. Simranjit Singh scored a brilliant field goal in the second minute of the quarter to level India 1-1. After this, taking advantage of Neelkant Sharma’s mistake in the 24th minute of the game, Niklas Wellen scored a goal to put Germany 2-1 ahead. Then in the very next minute, Benedict Furk scored a goal to put Germany 3-1 ahead.

The third quarter was completely in the name of the Indian Hockey team. In the very first minute of the quarter, India got a penalty stroke, which was capitalized by Rupinder Pal Singh and scored a brilliant goal. Then in the 34th minute of the game, Simranjit Singh put a brilliant pass from Gurjant Singh into the goalpost to give India a 5-3 lead. After this, India got three penalty corners in this quarter, but the Indian team could not score.

In the fourth quarter, the German team tried its best to make a comeback. In the 48th minute of the game, Lucas Windfeder scored a penalty corner to make the score 4-5. Then in the 54th minute, Germany had a chance to level the match by scoring a penalty corner, but PR Sreejesh foiled the opportunity with a brilliant defense. Germany team got another penalty corner in the last second, but once again PR Sreejesh saved India to ensure victory.

In Group A, India was placed along with defending champions Argentina, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and Spain. At the same time, teams from Belgium, Canada, Germany, Britain, Netherlands and South Africa were in Group B. All the teams played each other and the top four teams from both the groups advanced to the semi-finals. India reached the quarter-finals by finishing second in their group with four wins and one loss. Then in the quarter-finals, India defeated Great Britain 3-1 to make it to the semi-finals. However, India lost 5-2 to Belgium in the semi-finals.
